The old adage, No foot, no horse should also be No mouth, no horse. Anyone who has ever experienced any dental abnormality (i.e. tooth pain, soft tissue laceration, abscess, etc.) can verify that these problems make it difficult to do almost anything. Now imagine how these problems are compounded in the horse by the fact that most communication under saddle is done through the mouth. Minor dental problems have a major impact on performance under saddle. Dental examinations and filing are an important part of the annual healthcare for your horse. Regular dental maintenance makes it easier to maintain peak performance, improve attitude, maintain appropriate body condition, while reducing risk for colic or choke. Cedar Run Veterinary Services uses the Powerfloat System, available only through veterinarians, to afford improved access to the rear cheek teeth while minimizing the physical discomfort that manual floating causes your horse. We have performed hundreds of floatings without complications. Almost all of our dental patients have improved head carriage and poll flexion with reduced head tossing after floating. Work with your veterinarian to keep your horse’s mouth in optimum condition, it may be the best investment you can make in your horse. |
